CHILDREN’S CREATIVE DANCE

Ages 1 1/2  - 7 Years
Our year round creative dance program offers a developmentally based movement curriculum for young children that combines an introduction to dance skills and directed improvisation. This program is designed to increase range of movement and encourage children to move freely and expressively. Fundamentals and Improvisation for ages six and seven provides the transition from Creative Dance to Specific Technique Classes.

BALLET
MoCo Arts offers a ballet program based on the Russian Syllabus. This program offers solid technical training for those who are serious about studying this demanding discipline, as well as for those who wish to take ballet class for strength, endurance and to support other dance forms. Ballet is a demanding physical discipline, and it must be understood that a student can take several years to complete one level of study. Those taking two or more classes per week will advance at a faster rate, and this is highly encouraged. Students advance through the levels with permission of the ballet staff.

POINTE
Pointe is offered at three levels. Both Pointe and Ballet Repertory students must take the preceding Ballet class, and are encouraged to take at least two Ballet classes per week. Enrollment and advancement in Pointe class is by permission of the instructor. Placement classes are available for new students.

MODERN DANCE
Modern Dance belies strict definition, as it developed in response to the desire for individual artistic freedom and encourages dancers to develop personal choreographic styles. MoCo Arts modern dance classes follow an eclectic syllabus inspired by Merce Cunningham, Jose Limon and Paul Taylor, three of the great modern American choreographers of the 20th century. The classes offer center warm-up technique, floor work, traveling combinations. High energy classes incorporate elements of classical jazz, ballet, lyrical and ethnic dance, with a focus on developing strong rhythmic connections, isolations, uses of the back, levels and spatial awareness.

BALLET AND MODERN REPERTORY
Repertory classes give students the opportunity to learn choreography with a focus on performance. Students commit to consistent class attendance and to extra rehearsals, as needed,  in order to perform in a variety of public outreach and educational venues. Our performance schedule includes  works in progress performances, our own version of the MoCo Nutcracker in December and our annual end-of-year performance. Our modern dancers promote reading and dance through the Living Literature performance series, in public schools which is funded, in part by the Cheshire County Community Youth Profiles, the Toadstool Bookshops, and other local  businesses. Students who  wish to perform should consult with their instructor about performance opportunities.

JAZZ, HIP HOP, AND TAP
Jazz, Hip Hop, Kids-Bop and Tap classes include, age-appropriate, basic jazz, hip hop and tap technique, dance combinations from original Broadway shows and choreography using a wide range of music selections. These are all demanding, high energy classes with a focus on showmanship and style. These students learn technique, choreography and performance skills during regular class time. Extra rehearsals for performances may be scheduled at the teachers’ discretion.

BELLY DANCE
Beginner Middle Eastern classes are offered throughout the year.

SOCIAL DANCE PROGRAM
The Social Dance Program provides fun and skill development to any level dancer. The classes focus on partnering skills, and rhythmic identification while learning a variety of patterns. The syllabus follows a sequence that gradually increases ability. Ballroom, Swing, Latin (Salsa, Merengue). Whether you choose group lessons, workshops, private lessons or our public dances, you’ll enjoy our 1,800 square-foot floating hardwood floor in a friendly, smoke-free atmosphere. Beginner classes in Swing, Ballroom and Latin are specially designed for those who have never felt comfortable on the dance floor. More advanced and review classes are available for those with experience.

PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons in Ballroom or Swing provide an accelerated learning experience for those who prefer a more flexible schedule. Bride & Groom sessions are available to help prepare for that very first dance! The entire wedding party may arrange for private lessons. Bring the music of your choice.
